How to deal with waste machinery oil

Five commonly used processing methods for waste machinery oil

The so-called waste mechanical oil refers to the fact that the engine oil is mixed with water, dust, other miscellaneous oils, metal powder and other impurities produced by the wear of machine parts during use; the second means that the engine oil gradually deteriorates and generates organic acids, colloids and asphalt-like substances. . The regeneration of waste engine oil is to remove impurities in the engine oil through sedimentation, distillation, pickling, alkali washing, filtration and other methods. The five commonly used treatment methods are as follows:

1: sedimentation. Let the waste oil stand to allow the impurities to drop and separate. The settling time is determined by the oil quality and oil temperature. The higher the oil temperature, the smaller the viscosity, the easier it is for impurities to fall, and the shorter the settling time. Generally, the settling time of impurities in engine oil is related to temperature.

2: Distillation. Put the waste engine oil after sedimentation treatment to remove the sediment into a distillation flask. Install the distillation device and heat for atmospheric distillation. What distills out at 180°C is gasoline, the fraction between 180 and 360°C is diesel, and what remains is engine oil. If it is known that there are no impurities such as gasoline and diesel in the waste engine oil, this step can be omitted.

3: Pickling: Put the settled and distilled engine oil into a large beaker, heat it to 35°C, and slowly add concentrated sulfuric acid accounting for about 6 to 8% of the oil volume while stirring (complete the addition within 30 minutes ). At this time, the concentrated sulfuric acid reacts with the colloid and asphalt-like impurities in the waste engine oil to undergo a sulfonation reaction. In order to remove these sulfonated impurities, a 10% caustic soda solution accounting for 1% of the oil volume is added to act as a coagulant and accelerate the stratification of impurities. After adding alkali, stir for 5 minutes and let it sit for a while, obvious stratification will appear. The upper oil will be yellow-green without black particles and other impurities.

4: alkali washing is to remove the organic acids in the waste engine oil and neutralize the sulfuric acid remaining during pickling. Add the pickled engine oil into another beaker, heat it to 90°C, slowly add sodium carbonate powder accounting for 5% of the oil mass while stirring, and check the acidity and alkalinity of the engine oil after 20 minutes. Take two test tubes, add 1 mL of distilled water to each, add 2 drops of phenolphthalein reagent to one of them, and add 2 drops of methyl orange reagent to the other. Then add 1 mL of oil sample in two test tubes respectively, and shake for 3 minutes. If the color of the aqueous solution layer in the two test tubes does not change, it means that the oil is neutral, and the machine oil should become clear at this time.

5: filtration industry uses oil filter for filtration. Household engine oil can be filtered 2 to 4 times with 4 to 6 layers of silk cloth or filtered with an oil filter truck or oil filter machine to obtain qualified engine oil.
[Note] If you know the various impurity components in the waste engine oil, you can adjust the above steps according to the actual situation. For example, engine oil only contains solid impurities such as metal shavings, which can be separated by sedimentation. If the engine oil is only mixed with gasoline, diesel and other substances, regenerated engine oil can be obtained through distillation. If the engine oil is only oxidized and deteriorated, just use pickling or alkali washing to remove organic acids and other impurities.
